Profile School Counselors

School counselors are not the same as regular teacher. Teachers bisang more studies are edukatof, but counselors aim at reducing the problem and do not teach like a teacher. It is certainly the duty of a counselor is more severe than bisang studies teacher, because in dealing with counselee needed understanding of the characteristics, personality, interests, talents, and associated with counselee is having problems. So that require counseling techniques relevant to the problem counselee.

The profile displays the characteristics of a counselor who is known for a long time. In 1994 Graves has shown that a counselor should have the integrity and vitality, agile, and skilled, has the ability to assess and predict a sharp, high personal standards, trained and widely experienced. Dowson (1948) saw that the counselors should possess the characteristics of an objective, respecting the child, understand themselves, cooked in assessing and estimating, able to listen and keep secrets, a human source, firm in conviction, have a sense of humor, able to criticize constructively, and has a mature and integrated personality. At that time it has also recognized 24 outstanding characteristic of a counselor, among others: honest, loyal, healthy, good personality and character, has a solid philosophy of life and have the attitude that what he was doing it (ie employment counseling) is a matter that should do.

Counselors are also portrayed as having feminine traits or maternal (Farson, 1954), such as gentle, playful, likes to give and not much demand, and so forth. The formulation given by Asca (1964) about the nature of npekerjaan counselor is a "mission with a profound relevance to the values kemausiaan". Myrick and Witmer (1972) suggested five types of counselor role, namely as a counselor (in a special sense), as consultant, as team members work, as managers, as well as a source of information and services for the community.

Munro, Manthei and Small (1979) express some matters relating to the profile counselor. They stated that although no firm yan pattern of traits or personality traits that should be owned by an effective counselor, but at least one counselor must have the properties of flexible, warm, able to accept other people, open, can feel suffering of others, to know itself, does not pretend to be, respecting others, not selfish, and objective. Research on personality traits is very difficult because of various factors, such inequality of language, problems of benchmarking and measurement, and problem use of the research itself. In an effort to describe the properties of an effective counselor, the best way is to combine research results, expert opinions, personal experiences, and common sense. Perhaps a more useful way to show the personality traits that stand out, namely as a model counselor, relationship counselor counseling and courage to do the counseling.
